@Anonymous - you can use either selenium or opensta or other performance test focused tool to achieve what you aim to achieve. It would be simpler to set up, in my opinion, if you used a performance tool and made sure to specify the behavior of your different 'users', ie., your locations with their different network characteristics, etc. In some of the more developed load test tools like silkperformer, you can specify at the user group level what their network speeds are, and the tool will simulate that behavior, so any performance problems associated with slow users holding open connections (or other root cause) could be simulated. Just wondering if you have checked out Test Automation FX (http://www.testautomationfx.com)? I like the way they have approached test automation and see the possibility now to get developers along on the "test automation train" as far as functional testing goes. To my experience we always have to rely on the developers to get any maintainable test automation and so far they do not really care for any other tools than visual studio!

i think this is a late comment to add to the question but m gonna do it anyways.

we had the same issue while working on our automation scripts, while creating the scripts we found that some elements do not have id's and others that have dynamically change theirs (i guess this was due to .net behavior or sth) anyways, the best thing we did is that we raised the issue to top mgt and we forced the developers to follow our rules; each item should have a static id and stuff.
so its like the first comments implied, automation ppl should be part of the game since its beginning and not at the later stages of the SDLC, they should force their rules just as other players do, and this should be part of the test plan like previosely stated.

The first thing which testers should always do is to be engaged and tell developers what they need. If they are part of the software design process they should make sure that the needs of test automation are articulated/captured in meeting minutes. As with other issues testers should be on top of/aware of what developers are doing. Usually for automation developers should be amenable to helping testers (more than with other issues). For example if a defect requires a major architectural change late in the cycle, you may face developer resistance. Enhancing automation ability is usually much less difficult.

I guess most people assume that performance testing always means server performance, but I would like to do end-user performance testing.

Basically, I have a web-based application that will be used worldwide. I'm being asked to document how test scenarios will perform in 80-90 different locations -- each with unique network characteristics. From extrmely high latency to very constrained bandwidth. Some as poor as <160KBs and 800+ms.

So, what I want is a single test client that can execute test scenarios that range from 20-50 page navigations or submissions. I want the entire functional scenario to be scripted and I want to re-configure my lab network simulation to cover each of the locations under test.

In this case, can Selenium give me the per page test results and overall scenario response times I need? Are there better ways to do this kind of testing?
