TestSquad.org was a site that discussed several important topics. One of these topics was the advantages and disadvantages of using Watir. Some advantages and achievements of using Watir that were listed by the site included that in fourteen smoke test cases, ten were automated; that accuracy was improved due to human error being reduced for multiple releases, the guarantee that the same test case would be run automatically each time, and that the time it took to run smoke test cases were reduced by seventy percent.

In an effort to be fair, the site also discussed some of the disadvantages of using Watir. These included needing knowledge in the Ruby programming language in order to be successful, not supporting certain HTML elements, limited reporting capabilities, and not fully developed to support Mozilla Firefox and certain other browsers.

The site maintainer eventually prototyped an automation test model for a .NET project to come to a conclusion about whether or not using Watir tended to be a positive experience. The results fared well for Watir, showing that human errors were completely eliminated and that testing time was reduced greatly. At the end of the test, the site maintainer felt that Watir was a useful and, best of all, free alternative for the test automation of .NET web applications. Also, it had more features and capabilities than many other methods. The maintainer said that the reduction in time would be very useful with products that required recurrent smoke tests for small builds. The scripting language, Ruby, used by the program was a strong and reliable one that allowed for more capabilities. The conclusion, ultimately, was that the only real downfall to Watir was that it was limited in reporting and recognition of HTML elements, and that using this open source and free alternative would help businesses to save a great deal of time and money.
